Together, the small army repeated the training for the two days in the same fashion. Ramshi would make sure that the static stones were fully charged so everyone could heal and replenish their strength. Ranir became bored with defensive techniques. At this point, it began to feel more like a routine than a challenge.

“You ready?” he bellowed out over the eruptive sounds of magic and blades on the third morning. “It is my turn!”

The group charged him. Warriors appeared on all sides as the mages had teleported in a wide circle. They were getting better at being unpredictable as well.

Ranir began sending waves of elemental magic in turns with defensive spells. One by one, he focused a spell and made sure it landed without fail. Within thirty seconds, there was only one fire mage left standing in front of him. Both of his hands were surging with fire––ready to attack. Fear caused him to hesitate.

Charging his hand with lightning, Ranir sprinted at the man. They both cast at the same time, causing the lightning and fire to channel into each other. Like a game of tug-o-war, the powerful center grew into a ball, moving back and forth between them.

Ranir leaned to the side to see the mage from around the magic. The man was baring his teeth and sweating. Pushing more energy into his arc, the blue overtook the orange flames and sent the mage flying through the air. He smashed through a small statue, sending pieces of clay in every direction. “I read once that hesitation is the enemy of surprise and a swift victory.”

Looking around at the shattered statue, he held up his hand as a few mages and warriors rose to their feet for another wave of attacks. “Wait!” he said. “Line up.”

As they were instructed, mages and warriors lined up, clutching different parts of their bodies. Ranir pulled the stones from his belt satchel and held them out. The last fire mage to attack stepped forward took the stones and began healing the rest of the group.

“I have a question for you mages,” started Ranir as he walked over to the pieces of clay. “Have you ever used non-living spells in combat before?” They all stared blankly at him until someone to his right spoke up, startling him.

“I have,” called a familiar voice. Ranir turned to see Sora standing by Ramshi. Credin was absent.

Smiling, he marched towards her. “Lady Sora.”

She walked to Ranir and gave him a short bow first, surprising everyone in the mass as they gasped and groaned; she was the Baron of Killiad after all. Ranir should have bowed first.

“What are you doing here?” whispered Ranir.

“Well, it seems I am helping you,” she said through laughter.

“You will be a nice addition to the group.” Ranir smiled with hope.

“Oh, sorry. Not like that. I won’t be heading into battle.”

Ranir’s heart sank. “Oh, I see.”

“Unless the fight comes to Killiad again, that is,” she explained. “I’ve begun gathering my own mages to fortify the city. I worry it won’t be enough.
